For most of my life, I thought I understood how people learned.

​

I became a teacher, because I loved stories, questions, and watching students discover ideas they didn't know they were capable of having. Over the past fifteen years, I've taught in public schools, private schools, and as a Peace Corps volunteer, and every classroom has reinforced the same belief: people flourish when they feel understood.

​

When I became a parent, however, I realized I had only been seeing part of the picture.

Like many parents, I expected my children to change me. I wasn't prepared for how completely they would reshape the way I understood communication, behavior, learning, and what it means to truly know another human being.

​

My oldest son, who is ADHD, taught me that emotions deserve to be witnessed before they can be solved. My youngest son, who is autistic, taught me that communication is often much bigger than spoken language and that understanding another person usually begins with learning to notice what everyone else overlooks. My husband has taught me many of those same lessons from the perspective of an autistic and ADHD adult. Together, they have quietly transformed not only the way I parent, but the way I teach, write, listen, and move through the world.

Around the same time, another classroom began teaching me alongside the one at school:

Long before I realized it, the natural world had become one of my greatest teachers. Caring for animals, planting gardens, watching children spend hours studying insects or building imaginary worlds from sticks and mud reminded me that curiosity rarely grows when it's rushed. Nature has a remarkable way of teaching patience, empathy, responsibility, creativity, and quiet observation without ever saying a word.

Eventually, I noticed something surprising...

The books I was writing, the curriculum I was designing, the conversations I was having with parents and educators, and the questions I kept asking myself were all pointing toward the same idea.

​

Understanding changes everything.

It changes classrooms.

It changes families.

It changes the stories we tell ourselves about one another.

​

Lines & Leaves Studio grew from that realization.

​

This isn't simply a place to publish books. It's a place to collect stories, resources, conversations, and ideas that help us better understand ourselves and the people we love. Some of those stories are written for children. Others are written for adults. Some become educational resources, workshops, or conversations with families and schools. No matter the form they take, they all begin with the same hope: that understanding creates more compassionate homes, more thoughtful classrooms, and stronger communities.

I'm still learning every day.

My children continue to surprise me. My students continue to challenge me. The natural world continues to remind me to slow down. Every year I become a little more convinced that the most meaningful growth begins not with having better answers, but with asking better questions.
